Autumn Adventures: How Children’s Yoga Can Help Little Ones Move, Play & Explore

There’s something lovely about autumn.

The leaves start changing colour, there are conkers to collect, puddles to jump in and plenty of opportunities for little ones to get outside and explore.

For children, autumn can be a season full of movement. And actually, that’s one of the things we love about children’s yoga at Mummy & Baby Buddies too.

Children’s yoga doesn’t have to mean sitting quietly on a mat and trying to hold a perfect pose. For little ones, it can be about moving, playing, imagining and having fun.

Yoga can be an adventure

One of the easiest ways to introduce yoga to children is through imagination.

Perhaps we become tall trees swaying in the wind, curl up like little hedgehogs getting ready for winter or stretch our arms like branches reaching towards the sky.

A simple yoga session can become a whole adventure.

And when children are enjoying themselves, they often don’t even realise how much they are moving.

Why movement matters

Children are naturally active, but there are plenty of reasons to encourage different types of movement as they grow.

Yoga can give children opportunities to develop balance, coordination, flexibility and body awareness. It can also encourage them to notice how their bodies feel as they move.

There isn’t a need for children to be able to perform complicated poses. In fact, there is no such thing as a “perfect” children’s yoga pose.

It is much more about exploring movement and finding something that feels comfortable.

It isn’t all about being still

One of the things parents sometimes associate with yoga is quietness and stillness.

And yes, there can be a lovely calm element to children’s yoga.

But children’s yoga can also be noisy, energetic and full of giggles!

We might move quickly, slowly, stretch, balance, pretend to be animals or make up our own movements. Then, after all that activity, we might take a few moments to slow down and notice our breathing.

That combination of movement and calm can be particularly useful for little ones.

Bringing a little autumn yoga home

You don’t need special equipment or a large space to have a go at home.

Why not choose three autumn-inspired movements together?

🍁 Tall Tree – Stand tall with arms reaching towards the sky, then gently sway from side to side.

🦔 Little Hedgehog – Curl up small and then slowly stretch out your arms and legs.

🐸 Frog Jumps – Bend your knees and have a few gentle frog jumps. Make sure there is plenty of space around you!

You can even finish by lying or sitting comfortably and taking a few slow breaths together.

It doesn’t need to be a formal yoga session. Five minutes of playful movement can be enough.

Making memories through movement

Perhaps the biggest benefit of doing yoga with your child isn’t the pose itself.

It’s the opportunity to stop for a few minutes, put everything else to one side and spend some time together.

Children learn through play, repetition and connection. Sometimes the simplest activities become the ones they remember.

So this autumn, why not embrace the leaves, puddles, conkers and all the wonderful chaos that comes with the season?

And if you fancy bringing a little more movement and imagination into your week, we’d love to welcome you to a Mummy & Baby Buddies session.

Because children’s yoga isn’t about getting every movement “right”.

It’s about moving, exploring, having fun and enjoying time together.
